SCULPTURE PARK AND GALLERY
We pay our respects to the Gundungurra people who are the traditional custodians of the land, whose deepening connection to culture and customs have cared for this country for over 65,000 years. We acknowledge Elders past, present and emerging for their immense spiritual connection to place which has never ceded.
The genesis of an art park dates back to the Renaissance. In more recent history (1960's) the USA created a new Renaissance, with contemporary sculpture in the landscape. It has progressively gained momentum globally.
Even, "Down Under", Melbourne proudly supports three significant sculpture parks, which are philanthropically backed by Billionaires. Therefore, a Sydney sculpture park was well overdue. This is one of the reason why we now have the Hillview Sculpture Park and Gallery. A significant departure from the Melbourne model is that it is backed by a relative "Battler", artists and the community.
Here you can view the land through an aesthetic lens. The surrounding landscapes play against the sculptures colours, character, form etc. We therefore have a relationship between art and place; and the aesthetic. The landscape becomes an alternative gallery, which happens to be outside. This is then amplified by human plantings, which intern creates imaginary rooms, in a rural setting. Intern we wander through the rooms of the park, much like we wander through the rooms of a gallery. In either case, we have create a home for the exhibition of Sculpture. The sculpture park and gallery is a work in progress, because of two things; we are constantly adding excellent new work and we are consistently selling work.
Hillview is also an education exercise. It encourages the consideration of sculpture in the outdoor and in the indoor rooms. It gives participants the opportunity to learn about and experience art. Hillview is found in an idyllic rural landscape and State heritage buildings and gardens. It often offers a greatly varied environment for urban dwellers. We welcome the public to experience the elegance of the new Hillview.
